I am a self-taught photographer who first picked up a camera with intention while living in Shanghai almost a decade ago. My skillset developed and grew while working with international photographers, documenting events and shooting for lifestyle magazines. The artistic practice I follow today continues to be influenced by the technical training I gained through these experiences. After returning to Canada, I completed the Graphic Design program at BCIT.

My photography focuses on highlighting found elements of visual design in everyday scenes and the stories they tell. I address the graphic qualities of light, colour, form and line in the same manner as the human figures within my work; as subjects. These photographs are motivated by finding hidden narratives and overlooked beauty in the day-to-day.

The compositions in my photographs are not pre-arranged, but are discovered as I walk with camera in hand. This also means my photographs use natural and found light sources. I’m continuously assessing light. What are the shadows doing and where? What colours are most intense and who is in my view connecting these visual dots? Intentionally being aware of these and other elements within my environment is essential in my art practice.

The work explores the open narratives, connections and play between these found graphic elements and the figures, or lack of, within each scene. These photographs share stories—not just the stories of people, but also of the buildings they have built, the things they have taken or discarded and the decisions being made in the moment.

My photography has been included in juried multi-media shows, published online and selected for inclusion in art books.
